Holy crap – it’s almost time to go! (as of June 10th, when I wrote this) We are doing 9 days on the ship (Norwegian Sun) plus a travel day on each side from Colorado to Seattle and back. Of course, with flying these days and how “reliable” (not) the flights can be, we were a little concerned about making sure we had our luggage and supplies for a 9 day cruise. We arrived in Seattle at about 9:30 p.m. and needed to be at the ship by 11:00 a.m. the next morning. So, we resolved, no matter what, we would only take carryon luggage on our flight from Montrose to Seattle. (BTW - screw it coming home - we got stuff there so we checked the bags on the way back!)
For me, that’s not a real struggle. For mom, I have to say I am SO PROUD of her – she did it! Tips we recommend are picking a color then a few various items to mix and match. I chose black slacks, dark jeans and light wash jeans. My tops and sweaters (lots of sweaters for Alaska!) all would match any one of the three different pant selections. I wore one pair of shoes (tennis shoes), took a pair of ankle height black boots (for dressy) and a pair of black sandals. Honestly, the sandals could have lived in their spot at home since it was so frickin’ cold but they got to come out in Seattle, so not a total waste of space. I actually wore my largest sweater (long, heavy cardigan) while traveling to save space in my suitcase. Two other cardigans, long sleeved shirts and blouses completed the supplies.
One thing I highly recommend – make sure you have pockets in your pants. Front and back pockets are best. I have a smaller size phone so it goes in my front right pocket. My room key always lives in my back right pocket. My lip balm or lip gloss lives in my front left pocket. I usually have additional space for whatever misc. item(s) I might want to have on me. On the ship, no matter where you go or what you do, they require your room key. It’s like your onboard credit card (it is linked to your cc) and identifier that you use to buy at the gift shop, spa or… Your key is also used for your drinks (or drink package you may have purchased like I did) additional items for dinners, etc. OH – and you will need it to get back in your cabin for that all important sleep time.
Some packing tips for the actual suitcase I recommend – roll your clothes. It does save space and help with wrinkles – kinda, depending on fabric. Packing cubes are a nice thing to use if you have them – helping with the space, wrinkles and some water proofing if you’re worried about that. (Usually with checked luggage.) These I have linked to have lots of colors and different sizes and I have ordered them for my next adventure.
So we are packed and off we go from Montrose, CO to Seattle, WA where we will board our cruise ship, The Norwegian Sun on Monday, June 12, 2023 by 11:00 a.m. Happy 75th mom – here’s to another great adventure!
